Sketchbook

“Do this your own way” are the last words from my mom to me as she died of covid. Seems she was encouraging me to handle her passing and my life in my own way, free of guilt or shame, no matter how different I was from family & friends. Since her passing those 5 words regularly bubble up inside me. Though they’re simple, they’ve really gotten me to reflect on how I’d often get sidetracked by striving for “sophistication” instead of being fully myself. My sketchbooks have always been a private place for me, but there are some parts that now feel right to share as part of this portfolio, in honor of my gorgeous mama, who from the afterlife encourages me to let the quirky, un-sophisticated, truest, parts of myself show.
